Traditional crew cuts involve cutting all of the hair to less than ¼ inch in length. Created by military barbers as a way to control lice infestations, crew cuts have been shown to make many men appear to be up to 10 years younger than their actual age. The traditional flattop is another popular short style. The sides and back are cut as with a crew cut while the top is left about twice as long and shaped to form a flat area on top of the head. Made popular in the 1950s, this hair style is still common and is considered appropriate for men in many different professions.
